What is SkinVive by Juvederm?
The first and only product of its kind to be FDA-approved, SkinVive is a hyaluronic acid (HA) microdroplet injectable gel specifically designed to improve skin smoothness of the cheeks. It was developed by Allergan, the makers of Botox Cosmetic as part of the Juvederm line of dermal fillers.
HA is a substance that occurs naturally in your skin and holds many times its weight in water, helping your skin maintain its firmness and elasticity. Our natural levels of HA decrease as we age, leading to fine lines, wrinkles and skin dryness.
Here’s where SkinVive comes in. Rather than large particles of HA that stay in place–like most fillers–SkinVive contains microdroplets that melt into the epidermis to improve skin quality and actually improve your skin’s health. The formula blends seamlessly into your skin for smooth, natural-looking hydration and a lasting glow. Think of it as an injectable moisturizer!

- Smoother, younger-looking skin

Ideal Candidates for SkinVive
SkinVive is approved for adults over the age of 21 who wish to subtly improve the smoothness and hydration of their skin without altering their face shape or volume. Most of our patients are in their 30s to 50s, but SkinVive can be appropriate for a wide range of ages depending on the condition of your skin.
Good candidates for SkinVive want to address:
- Fine lines and wrinkles on the cheeks
- Volume loss
- Uneven skin texture
- Dry-looking, dull skin
However, if you have deeper lines or wrinkles, another product from Juvederm such as Ultra PLus XC, Voluma XC or Vollure XC.
Although SkinVive has an excellent safety profile, it’s not for everyone. People who have severe allergies, take blood-thinning medication or are immunosuppressed may not be good candidates for this procedure. Additionally, if you’re planning on undergoing another skin treatment such as a chemical peel or microneedling, talk to your provider before receiving SkinVive injections.
Before & Afters
After a SkinVive treatment, your skin will immediately appear plumper and fuller with fewer fine lines. Thanks to the enhanced smoothness of your cheeks, you’ll even notice more light reflecting off your skin, creating a natural glow. The complete results will appear after several days, once any initial swelling has had time to subside.
What to Expect at Your SkinVive Appointment
Your SkinVive experience begins with a consultation with one of our experts. They’ll discuss your skin concerns, history, and goals, as well as perform an examination on your skin.
Once you’re established as a good candidate for SkinVive, you’ll lie on one of our comfortable treatment tables. Your provider will inject tiny quantities of SkinVive all across the treatment area, with each injection placed less than a centimeter apart. The product contains lidocaine, an anesthetic, to make the experience as pleasant as possible; you may also choose to get a topical numbing agent beforehand if you’re concerned about pain.
When all the injections have been made, your provider will massage the area to help the product melt into your skin.
Recovery & aftercare
SkinVive requires very little recovery time. We recommend avoiding saunas, strenuous exercises, or using any products that might irritate the injection sites for 24 hours. You may experience redness and swelling, but these symptoms typically disappear on their own after a few days.
Side effects
As with any cosmetic procedure, SkinVive carries the risk of a few side effects. They include lumps, bumps, swelling, redness, bruising, pain, tenderness, firmness, and itching at the injection sites. These symptoms usually clear up on their own, but if you experience persistent or ongoing side effects, contact your doctor.

FAQs
Is SkinVive safe?
SkinVive is approved for all skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types I-VI) and considered quite safe when injected by a qualified professional. To avoid complications caused by improper injection technique, be sure to visit a licensed, qualified provider for SkinVive and any other cosmetic treatment.
Can SkinVive replace traditional fillers?
SkinVive offers a unique approach to skin rejuvenation that’s subtler than most dermal fillers. While it can provide excellent results for many patients, whether it can completely replace traditional fillers depends on your individual needs and preferences. During your consultation, our experts will discuss the best treatment options to achieve your desired outcome.
How long do results last?
SkinVive results can last up to 6 months with optimal treatment. In a clinical study conducted by Allergan Aesthetics, 100% percent of patients reported increased skin hydration at the one-month mark, and the majority continued to do so at a 6-month follow up.
Factors such as your age, skin type, lifestyle, and the treatment area can influence how long the results endure. To maintain your results, follow-up sessions may be recommended as part of your personalized treatment plan.
How do I prepare for a SkinVive session?
Preparing for a SkinVive session is straightforward. Arrive at your appointment with clean, makeup-free skin. Avoid taking blood-thinning medications or supplements like aspirin or fish oil in the days leading up to your treatment, as they can increase the risk of bruising. During your consultation, we will provide detailed pre-treatment instructions to ensure a successful and comfortable experience.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of SkinVive sessions you’ll need depends on your specific skin care goals and the condition of your skin. Many patients achieve noticeable improvements after a single session, but a series of sessions may be recommended for optimal and long-lasting results.
